Glass pool fence rules NSW, Sydney: frameless glass pool fence on stainless spigots with a glass gate and soft-close hinges

Glass pool fence rules in NSW

A glass pool fence has to meet the same NSW barrier rules as any other pool fence. Here's how they apply to glass panels and gates, what the glass makers specify, who can install it, and when to ask the council.

  • At least 1.2 m high from finished ground level
  • No gap over 10 cm under the glass; 100 mm max. between panels (Stratco)
  • Glass gate opens outwards, self-closes and self-latches
  • Glazing or fencing work over $5,000 needs a licence

The short answer

NSW has no separate rulebook for glass pool fences: glass has to meet the same barrier rules as any pool fence. That means at least 1.2 m high, no gap over 10 cm under the glass, panel gaps kept within 100 mm (glass fence maker Stratco's limit), nothing climbable within the 90 cm non-climbable zone, and a gate that opens outwards and closes and latches by itself. No NSW Government page sets a glass thickness; glass fence makers use toughened Grade A safety glass. Glazing or fencing work over $5,000 including GST needs a licensed contractor.

NSW pool fence rules that apply to glass

The NSW Government's guide for owners doesn't treat glass separately. The general rules apply to every panel, gap and gate:

Which Australian Standard your fence is measured against depends on when the pool was built. The NSW Government's guide lists AS 1926.1-2012 as the standard for pools built after 1 May 2013. The pool fence regulations guide covers the standards for older pools.

Glass thickness and safety glass for pool fences

No NSW Government or Sydney council page we found sets a glass thickness for pool fences. What the glass makers publish:

  • Stratco's frameless glass guide (2016) says its pool fence panels are "12mm thick Grade 'A' toughened glass" and its glass gates are 8 mm Grade A toughened glass.
  • Glass processor Tough Glass says its toughened glass meets AS/NZS 2208 for Grade A safety glass. Its 2026 warranty excludes spontaneous breakage caused by nickel sulphide.

If you're buying or replacing glass, ask the installer for the panel thickness and the safety glass marking, and keep the paperwork with your pool records.

Glass pool gate hinges and latches

A glass gate follows the same rules as any pool gate: it opens outwards, shuts by itself from any open position, latches every time, and has the latch release 1500 mm above the ground or shielded on the inside. Stratco's guide puts it simply: "Gate must swing AWAY from pool" and "must self close from all opened positions to a latched position".

Soft-close glass hinges need regular checks. The Polaris care guide says to tighten the hinge fixing screws every 6 months, without touching the speed adjustment cap, and to check gates near the coast every 2 to 4 weeks. The pool gate guide explains how to test the gate and what hinge makers say about adjusting them.

Glass pool fence problems to check before an inspection

  • A glass gate that has dropped, swings too slowly or doesn't latch from every position
  • Gaps between panels, or beside the gate, that have opened past 10 cm
  • Panels that move when pushed, or hardware that's rusted or worn. Penrith City Council's 2026 pool FAQ asks owners to check for "rust, wear or damage to hinges and latches".
  • Turf, paving or mulch that has changed the height or the gap under the glass
  • Pots, furniture or plants within the non-climbable zone outside the glass

The pool compliance checklist walks through the full barrier.

Who can install or repair a glass pool fence

The NSW Government's glazing work licence covers installing glass in prepared openings, including "fences, balustrades". Like fencing work, it needs a contractor licence for work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Glass fencing built as part of a new pool can also fall under the swimming pool building licence.

Check a contractor's licence on Service NSW before you sign. A fencing or glass contractor can't issue a pool certificate: only your council or a registered certifier can.

Does a glass pool fence need council approval?

No NSW Government page we found says a new or replacement glass pool fence is exempt from approval. The NSW Government's guide tells owners to talk to their local council about approval requirements, and the City of Parramatta says only a portable pool or spa and its barrier may be exempt, while "anything larger will require a DA". Ask your council before replacing a whole fence or changing where it runs.

Common questions

What are the rules for glass pool fences in NSW?

The same as any pool fence: at least 1.2 m high, no gap over 10 cm under the glass, panel gaps within 100 mm (Stratco's limit), a clear non-climbable zone, and a gate that opens outwards and closes and latches by itself.

What is the maximum gap between glass pool fence panels in NSW?

Stratco's glass fence guide (2016) says not to exceed 100 mm between panels. The NSW Government's guide says there must not be gaps of more than 10 cm "between any vertical bars"; applying that to glass panels is our reading.

How thick does pool fence glass need to be in NSW?

No NSW Government page sets a thickness. Glass fence makers use toughened Grade A safety glass; Stratco, for one, uses 12 mm panels and 8 mm gates.

Do I need council approval for a glass pool fence?

It can depend on the work. The NSW Government tells owners to ask their local council about approval requirements, so check before replacing a fence or moving it.

Who can repair a glass pool fence?

A glazier or fencing contractor. Work over $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence. A certifier or your council then re-inspects the barrier if you need a certificate.

Why won't my glass pool gate close?

Usually the soft-close hinges need adjusting or their fixing screws have loosened, or the gate has dropped out of line with the latch. Follow the hinge maker's instructions, or have a glass contractor adjust it.
