  • Only a council or NSW registered certifier can certify a pool
  • Fence work over $5,000 needs a licensed contractor
  • Sutherland Shire Council covered

The Shire has a single council, and Sutherland Shire Council charges one legislated fee for every certificate application. It also won't issue a certificate of compliance for a pool that isn't on the NSW Swimming Pool Register, so check your registration before you book.

Waterfront homes along the Port Hacking and Georges River, and older pools built before 1990, are among the categories the council's program lists separately. A certifier will tell you which standard your pool is assessed against.

What the council charges

Council inspection fees are set under the Swimming Pools Regulation 2018, so a council is usually the cheapest way to get a certificate. Private certifiers charge more and set their own booking times. These are the figures each council publishes, with the date of the page they come from.

Fee: A legislated fee of $250 applies for all applications.

High-risk pools, including tourist and visitor accommodation, unit complexes and child care centres, are inspected every 3 years. The council inspects on an owner's request, and may schedule owners without a current certificate when staff resources permit.

Register first, then book

Sutherland Shire Council says a certificate of compliance can't be issued to an unregistered pool. Registering online on the NSW Swimming Pool Register is free. See the NSW Swimming Pool Register guide.

Waterfront properties have their own category for pools built before 1 July 2010. If your property backs onto the water, say so in your request.
