The short answer

No Sydney fencing contractor publishes a price for replacing a pool gate hinge or latch, so the best published guide is Airtasker: NSW pool gate repair tasks run $125 – $250, with a median of $175 (October 2026). For new fencing, What's The Damage's Sydney guide puts glass pool fencing at $345 / $575 / $920 per metre and aluminium at $115 / $230 / $400 per metre (low / typical / high, incl. GST, October 2026). Residential fencing work over $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence, and a pool-servicing licence doesn't cover fencing.

Pool gate jobs include re-tensioning or replacing a self-closing hinge, re-aligning or replacing a latch, or rehanging a gate that has dropped. No Sydney fencing contractor was found publishing a fixed price for a hinge or latch replacement, so the figures below are marketplace prices from Airtasker for pool gate repair tasks in NSW.

Single task prices only go so far: the right price depends on the gate, the hardware fitted and whether parts need replacing. Take a photo of the hinge and latch when you ask for a quote, so the contractor can see what's there. The pool gate repairs page has more on what to send.

Fence repairs range from filling a gap under the fence to replacing a post or a glass panel. Sydney contractors rarely publish repair prices for pool fencing, and no Sydney contractor was found publishing a price for a single glass panel. The closest published figures are What's The Damage's Sydney prices for general fence repairs. They aren't pool-specific, but they show the scale for a post or a run of sheets.

A boundary fence that forms part of the pool barrier often needs more than a repair: it has to be at least 1.8 m high measured from the pool side, so raising it or adding a separate pool fence inside it can be part of the quote. Remember a neighbour shares a boundary fence, so talk to them early.

When a fence is past repairing, or a section is too low to bring up to 1.2 m, a new section or a new fence may be the better option. Get both priced. Each publisher's figures are shown separately below. Don't add them together or average them: they measure different things, from different dates.

Any new barrier has to meet AS 1926.1-2012, the current standard. If you replace part of an older fence, the NSW Government says AS 1926.1-2012 is applied and previous exemptions cease, so ask a certifier before you change anything on an older pool.

Repairs during a pool inspection

The NSW Government's guide for pool owners says some certifiers may do minor repairs, up to $1,000 including materials and labour, so that they can issue a certificate. You can use another tradesperson instead.

If a certifier offers to fix something on the day, ask for the price in writing first. You don't have to accept. Getting a fencing contractor to quote on the defect list, then booking a re-inspection, is just as valid. Re-inspection fees vary: Waverley Council lists $100 per re-inspection, and private certifiers set their own. See the pool inspection cost guide.

A fencing contractor can repair the barrier, but can't issue a certificate of compliance. Only your council or a registered certifier can do that after an inspection.

Licences for pool fence work in NSW

  • Over $5,000 needs a licence. Residential fencing work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST, needs a contractor licence (NSW Government).
  • The right category. A fencing licence covers fences and gates on residential property. Carpentry, glazing, metal fabrication, bricklaying and stonemasonry licences also allow some types of fencing.
  • New pool installations. The swimming pool building category includes safety fencing that is directly associated with a pool installation.
  • Pool servicing isn't fencing. The swimming pool repairs and servicing category doesn't include any work related to fencing for a pool or spa (NSW Government). Your pool technician's licence doesn't cover a fence repair over the threshold.
  • Check the licence. Look the contractor up on Service NSW before you sign. Licensed contractors must show their name and licence number in their advertising.

What to send for a pool fence repair quote

  • The certifier's list of defects, or the council notice, if you have one
  • The fence type: frameless glass, semi-frameless, aluminium, steel, timber or masonry
  • Photos of the problem, including the hinge and latch on a faulty gate
  • A rough length of the section that needs work
  • Your deadline, such as an exchange, settlement or lease start date

Ask for a written quote that shows the full price, including GST. If you haven't had an inspection yet, walk the fence with the free pool barrier checker or the pool compliance checklist so the quote covers everything at once.
